Each Sign of the Zodiac possesses certain qualities about it, this treatise is meant to lay out and define each of these qualities so that they can be understood by the student. The Signs are either Northern, Southern, Fixed, Common, Moveable, Masculine, Feminine, Diurnal, Nocturnal, Fruitful, Barren, Indifferent, Voice and Mute and will be dealt with in this order. First we will begin with the Signs which are Northern and those which are Southern.
The Northern Signs are; Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo. They are North because they lay above (or North from) the Equinoctial Line (or Celestial Equator). The Southern Signs are; Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. These are Southern because they are below the Equinoctial Line. The Northern Signs are deemed more powerful and therefore are masters over those in the Southern Signs which are seen as servants unto the Northern. This quality can be important in questions surrounding the strength of enemies, or what partners will be strong or weaker and who will submit to whom.
The next set of qualities belongs to the Quadruplicity, that is to say, Signs which are fixed, moveable or common. These qualities are extremely important to know and understand because they are helpful in a myria of questions concerning all aspects of the Natives life. These qualities are especially helpful in terms of time as will be explained shortly. These Signs are called the Quadruplicity because they are contained in three groups of four Signs (as the Triplicity is four groups of three Signs). The fixed Signs are; Taurus, Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio. Fixed Signs represent things which are stable, cannot be moved or taken. Each Sign in this group make up four elements which shows that the Sign represented by this Element is the most stable of that Element and constant, never changing. In specifics of time, the fixed Signs represent the length in years. For example, if one questions how long their loved one will remain ill or sick, if the significators are found in a fixed Sign, it is sure that they will remain so for years and no medicine can change the condition. Fixed Signs usually represent diseases which are chronical and life long. Found on the Ascendant, the Native will be steadfast and not easily wavering towards others will; stubborn.
The second grouping of the Quadruplicity are the common Signs which are; Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. These Signs are between the nature of the fixed and moveable for they are not quite fixed or moveable but fall between both. In concept of time they represent months to weeks. If a patient sick were to come, the disease will be of a medium length, it will be steady but not as steady as fixed Signs and between chronic and acute. If found on the Ascendant the Native shall be not easily moved nor not very fixed.
The final grouping of the Quadruplicity are the moveable Signs which are; Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. These Signs make up the four Cardinal points in the Zodiac and bring forth each of the four seasons when the Sun enters their influence. They represent the Summer and Winter Solstice as well as the Spring and Autumn Equinox as thus; Aries represents the Spring Equinox; Cancer, Summer Solstice; Libra, Autumn Equinox; Capricorn, Winter Solstice. These Signs represent things which are constantly changing and converting from one nature into another. In the case of times they represents hours or days time. For example, if a patient were to question the length of their sickness, and moveable Signs were found in the place of the significators, it would indicate that the sickness will not only be acute (and short lived) but also that it will morph into different diseases and be constantly changing from one to another. These changes will most likely take place a quite quickly after the disease has been contracted making it difficult to determine the true problem. It can also indicate that one will die as quickly as they can heal. When found on Ascendants, these Signs represent people who are opposite to the nature of the fixed Signs, being unsteadfast and wavering from one thing to another easily.
Some Signs in the Zodiac are masculine and some are feminine. This quality is important to know, especially for trying to discover the sex of a child or to discover the sex of a thief or another. The Signs which are masculine are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. They make up the Elements of Fire and Air and are masters over the feminine Signs which are; Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. The feminine Signs make up the Elements of Water and Earth and are servants unto the masculine Signs. When using these Signs in any question concerning sex, look to the House cusp and its Lords placement. These will give you the necessary testiments to make an accurate judgment. For example, if we find that the cups of the 5th House is masculine and the Lord in a masculine Sign then that will give us two testimonies that the child will be masculine. Of course for all questions in Astrology we need to take into account all the testimonies given.
The next set of Signs are diurnal and nocturnal. The diurnal are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius and when Planets of diurnal nature are found in these Signs or their House Signs diurnal then a Planet is more at dignity. Diurnal Planets seek to be in diurnal Signs. As for nocturnal they are made up of the Signs Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. These of course mirror those of the masculine and feminine; masculine being diurnal and feminine nocturnal.
We come to those Signs which are fruitful, barren and those which are indifferent. The Signs fruitful, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, are important indicators of fertility and promise. Fertile Signs bring results expected, whether those results are money or children & etc. For example, if we find that the Moon who is Lord of the 2nd House is placed in Cancer (a fruitful Sign), she will bring an increase of money and profit to the Native through his industry. All of the Signs which are fruitful are of the watery element. The barren Signs, Gemini, Leo, and Virgo are considered infertile signs and deny issue. If a Planet signifying issue (whether money, children, love & etc.) is found in a barren Sign, it will not give the results desired after and therefore deny the Native of their issue. The final grouping is of the Signs which are indifferent being, Aries, Taurus, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius. These Signs do not add any testimony to the results of issue.
The next are Signs which are feral, bestial, and humane. When any of these Signs are found on the Ascendant they indicate the temperament of the individual. The feral Signs are, Leo and last part of Sagittarius which indicate the Native to be fierce and wild, and wrathful. Those Signs which are bestial include Aries, Taurus, Leo, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. If these are found on the Ascendant they indicate the Native to take on the qualities of the beast represented. Finally the Signs which are humane (or human) are those of Gemini, Virgo, Libra, and Aquarius. When found in the Ascendant dictate the Native to be humane, generous, kind, and civil.
Lastly we come to Signs which are voiced or mute. Those which are voiced are Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. When these Signs are found in significators of speaking, primarily the Ascendant and Mercury, they indicate one of a pleasant and eloquent voice. The following Signs are counted as mute, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These Signs being found in those places aforementioned illustrate the Native to be dumb or hard of speaking, with developmental issues regarding voice formation or simply common or rude speakers.
