Above the Earth - Every chart is divided into two sections, above and below the earth. Any point that is above the earth is found in the 12th, 11th, 10th, 9th, 8th and 7th houses. All other Houses are considered under the earth.

Accidental Dignity/Debility - All dignities or debilities towards a Planet that have no relation to the signs they are placed in.

Affliction/Afflicted - A Planet that has been negatively influenced by a malevolent aspect (being either conjunct, square or in opposition). A Planet can also be afflicted by Combustion and Under the Beams of the Sun.

Alcocoden - An Arabic term for a Planet known as the giver of years and was found by finding the Planet which had the most essential dignity in the place of the Hyleg with aspect to it.

Almuten - The Planet in a chart that has the greatest essential and accidental dignities in a chart. This Planet has the most strength and therefore the most influence over the Native.

Anahibazon - The Arabic term for the tail of the Dragon, seen as a negative influence in the chart. Read more concerning this in the definition for Tail of the Dragon.

Anareta/Anaretic - The Destroyer of the Native or the killer. The Anareta is that (usually malevolent) Planet which makes a malevolent aspect to the Hyleg. The degree and place in which the Anareta occupies is called the Anareta point. The Anareta is useful in predicting death dates of individuals.

Angles - There are four cardinal points or angles in a chart which consist of the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th house cusps. These are the most powerful cusps in the chart and represent things that are fixed and long lasting. Each of these points or cusps represent directions, for example the Ascendant is the Eastern Angle and the Descendant (or seventh house) is the Western Angle. Planets placed in these houses are more powerful and potent than in the other houses.

Animodar of Ptolemy - A birth time rectification method to calculate the degree of the Ascendant and thus the placement of the houses.

Annual Revolution - A method of prediction which can be used in Mundane and Nativity readings which helped determine the influence of the Planets for that year.

Apply/Application - Used when two Planets meet in aspect or conjunction. This is usually indicated by the symbol A in modern chart casting software. Applications illustrate a more powerful influence (growing influence) between the two aspected Planets as opposed to Separation which is weaker.

Aquarius - The 11th sign of the Zodiac and the house of Saturn. Aquarius is also called the waterbearer.

Aratron/Arathron - Known as the Olympian spirit who rules over Saturn.

Aries - The 1st sign of the Zodiac and the house of Mars. Aries is represented by the Ram.

Ascendant - The degree of the Eastern Horizon when any chart has been cast. It is the area that is considered closest to the Native, Querent or Peoples (of a country) and has closest affinity with their looks and behaviour. The Ascendant rules over the head and face. The Ascendant also goes under the name of Horoscope, Eastern Angle or Rising Point. The sign found in this angle is called the Rising sign because from the Ascendant it ascends upwards towards the Heavens as the sun does. This point also represents infancy of the Native.

Aspects - A degreeical separation of the Planets which has a certain influence. There are four major aspects, two of which being benevolent; Trine and Sextile, two of which are malevolent; Opposition and Square. There is also a faux-aspect, while not truly an aspect it also has influence over the Planets when in this position and it is called a Conjunction. The Aspects determine the relationships between the Planets in a chart.
